BACTERIA? BUSTED! SALIVA? SORTED!
Xylitol: The Sweet Ingredient that Loves Your Teeth
We all know the general rule is, ‘Sugar rots your teeth!’ and, to an extent, it’s true.
But here’s the BUT – not all sugars spell trouble for oral health.
Yes, most sugars are a feast for bacteria, the by-product of that feast being tooth-demineralising plaque acid that opens the door to decay.
But one type of sugar’s a superhero for teeth – xylitol.

SHOW YOUR WORKING OUT
Xylitol? Let’s look at its science-backed credentials:
- Bacteria fooling? Check.
- Saliva stimulating? Sure is!
- Remineralising facilitator? Yup.
All in all, a great CV for this natural and naturally sweet oral health ingredient.
PLEASE BE AWARE: Before we go further, please note, xylitol is poisonous to dogs so please keep pooch away from xylitol products.

STEP UP TO THE PODIUM, XYLITOL
What is xylitol?
Xylitol’s natural. It’s found in lots of plants – berries, oats, mushrooms, even birch trees. Your body produces tiny amounts, too.
Looking and tasting almost identical to regular sugar, xylitol’s classified as a sugar alcohol – but don't let its classification put you off. Consider xylitol a helpful chemical cousin with a misleading surname.
- It contains no ethanol (the alcohol found in boozy drinks)
- Causes no mouth dryness (in fact, it stimulates saliva)
- It’s completely safe for anyone avoiding alcohol. Phew!
Oh, and did we mention, decay-causing oral bacteria don’t like it, it boosts saliva’s natural powers of oral care and tooth enamel benefits over time?
Let’s take you through how and why ...

LET’S GO DEEPER
What Does Xylitol Do in Your Mouth?
Crucially, unlike regular sugar, xylitol has an entirely different effect inside your mouth.
- You enjoy the pleasant, sweet taste of xylitol but cariogenic bacteria (those decay causing bandits) can’t ferment it so can’t use it as food
- Since it's not a food for them, they can’t use it to make acid
- Your tooth enamel continues to benefit from your saliva’s protective pH
- Plus, xylitol helps deliver essential calcium and phosphate to tooth enamel
- Decay? Foiled! Enamel? Armoured!
But don’t worry, you don’t have to chew gum like a frenzied football manager on the touchline to harness the benefits of xylitol.
XyliMelts were designed for discreet and consistent xylitol delivery in your oral health routine. If you’re serious about your oral health – and if you’re here, we’re guessing you are – they’re worth adding to your routine.
SMALL DISC. SERIOUS IMPACT.
XyliMelts? They’re xylitol by day and xylitol by night (and that’s the key)
Xylitol’s not magic. It’s not a replacement for brushing twice a day, flossing, or seeing your dentist. But it is a genuinely evidence-backed ingredient that works with your mouth’s own defences – and XyliMelts are one of the most practical, effective ways to get it consistently.
Sustained. Discreet. Safe to use overnight – because they stick to your gum, tucked away, minding their own business – which is excellent news for your oral health.
And they’re friendly to braces, aligners, and busy lives. No getting caught in your brackets, eliminating the need to chew, they’ll just busily get on with their slow dissolve, and you can get on with, well, your thing.
Mild Mint, Flavour Free or Berry Smoothie, you can switch xylitol up with flavour (or no) as you choose!
THE NINJA OF ORAL CARE
Surprised? Some might say xylitol’s a silent bacteria assassin!
Here’s where the science gets satisfying and it brings a whole new meaning to draining the life out of ...
Xylitol starves decay-causing bacteria – by exhausting them. Stealthy, huh?
Streptococcus mutans, that main bacterial offender in tooth decay, mistakes xylitol for regular sugar, pulls it into the cell, tries to metabolise it ...
... and fails.
Completely.
Research published in Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dentistry describes what happens next: the bacteria expend energy in a cycle that yields them nothing. Oops, sorry, not sorry!
Within the bacteria, vacuoles form (that’s bubbles to you and I), the cell membrane degrades, and the xylitol is eventually expelled.
No energy gained.
No acid produced.
Just a very tired, very confused bacterium.
Over time, with regular exposure, studies suggest that streptococcus mutans populations in the mouth reduce.
Hah – take that decay causing culprit!

WHICH BRINGS US TO SOMETHING EVEN BETTER
Here's the xylitol science to make you smile
Ok, so we’ve learned that decay causing bacteria are exhausted by xylitol. But what about the bacteria that may perform beneficial roles in our mouths like helping us taste certain foods?
In 2012, a randomised, double-blind crossover trial answered that question for us: for the ‘goodies’, xylitol causes no significant changes at all. Those more helpful guys were completely fine.
It seems xylitol is remarkably targeted in its mischief. And this isn't a one-study wonder either. A systematic review of 21 xylitol studies concluded that xylitol is likely to decrease harmful streptococcus mutans counts while leaving the wider oral microbiota essentially undisturbed, leading researchers to suggest it shows properties of an oral prebiotic. A prebiotic? For your mouth?
We'll take that!
JOINING FORCES WITH YOUR JUICES
Xylitol: stimulates saliva, keeping it in play
Saliva is the mouth’s built-in defence system:
Neutralising acid from eating and drinking
Carrying minerals that help remineralise enamel
Flushing away debris
Xylitol encourages saliva production – which is especially valuable if you suffer from a dry mouth or take medications that reduce salivary flow. Having a dry mouth is increasingly being recognised as one of the major factors in enamel erosion.
Getting that saliva flowing, even and especially during the night, is important
Let a subscription to XyliMelts support your oral health.
XyliMelts conveniently stick to your gum or cheek and support your mouth becoming an oasis in which both xylitol and your saliva work hand in hand to deliver all important minerals, neutralise acid and wash away debris. You’ll get all the benefits from your mouth’s more beneficial bacteria – did you know some of them help you taste certain foods – pass the cheese – but you’ll be busting the butts of those bad bacteria. Fabulous!

NOT JUST THAT
Saliva stimulated by xylitol has higher concentrations of remineralising calcium and phosphate
Research suggests that the saliva stimulated by xylitol carries a higher concentration of calcium and phosphate than saliva alone. These minerals help repair early enamel damage. Of course, it doesn’t replace fluoride toothpaste but, used alongside good brushing habits, it’s one oral care player to have on your team.
DOSE ME!
How much xylitol do you actually need?
The answer is more than you might think. A general rule of thumb is to aim for around 5g over a 24-hour period, so that you’re kept nicely topped up.
The good news? Your supply could already be great and it’s easy to top up:
If you’re using clinical grade toothpaste and mouthwash such as VITIS Whitening or Cavity Repair and Protect, then xylitol, delivered periodically, is already part of your routine.
Add in 4-6 XyliMelts which deliver xylitol to your mouth over 1 – 2 hours at a time, delivering the xylitol punch more effectively than xylitol gum, which is chewed for short periods of time. That 0.55g of xylitol is going to work for longer. You get the intensity of xylitol, minus the faff of chewing gum!
Don’t forget, XyliMelts stick to your gum so can be tucked away but still fighting the good fight while you sleep. Xylitol while you zed? You bet!
A manageable, realistic daily routine that works with your life rather than taking it over? We'll take that!
No chewing required. No active effort at all, really. The XyliMelt disc does the work while you get on with your day – or your night.
That last part’s significant. XyliMelts can be used safely use while you sleep. For anyone with dry mouth – a condition that worsens overnight and significantly increases decay risk – they’re a gamechanger.
Pop one on before bed, and it keeps saliva flowing and xylitol working while you sleep.
BETTER A XYLITOL LATE ADOPTER THAN NOT AN ADOPTER AT ALL
