Q: Are electric toothbrushes better?
They can be brilliant – especially for brace wearers! Electric toothbrushes remove more plaque with less effort, and many have timers ensuring you brush for the full two minutes. That said, a manual brush works perfectly well when used properly. The best toothbrush? Whichever one you'll actually use twice a day! With braces or aligners, specialised orthodontic brushes like VITIS Access reach those tricky spots beautifully. With implants, sulcular or implant brushes like the VITIS Implant range of toothbrushes really help to offer specialist care to keep gums and implants healthy. Delicate gums can benefit from softer bristles like the VITIS Soft Access.
Q: How often should I change my toothbrush?
Every three months is the golden rule – or sooner if bristles look frayed, splayed and sad. Worn bristles can't clean effectively and might harbour bacteria. If you’ve had a cold or virus, it’s a good idea to change your toothbrush as the virus might be hanging out on your brush head. With fixed braces, you'll likely need toothbrushes replacing more frequently as brackets wear down bristles faster. Pop a reminder in your phone, on your calendar or just be vigilant and inspect your brush, or better yet, subscribe to regular deliveries so fresh brushes arrive automatically!
Q: How do I clean my toothbrush?
Rinse thoroughly under hot running water (not boiling water - keep those fancy boiled water taps away from your brush!) after each brush, removing all toothpaste and debris. Store upright in open air because bacteria love damp, enclosed spaces! No need for fancy sterilisers; simple rinsing does the job. Never share toothbrushes (even with family). For brushes with protective caps, ensure the brush head dries completely before covering!
