Q: What is oral hygiene?
Oral hygiene is everything you do to keep your mouth, teeth, and gums healthy and happy! It's brushing, flossing, interdental cleaning, using mouthwash, and visiting your dentist and hygienist regularly. Good oral hygiene prevents plaque build-up, cavities, gum disease, and bad breath. Think of it as your daily defence routine against bacteria – because your mouth deserves brilliant care every single day!
Q: Why is oral hygiene important?
Your oral health impacts your whole body! Poor oral hygiene leads to cavities, gum disease, tooth loss, and can even affect heart health and diabetes. With braces or aligners, it's doubly crucial – plaque around brackets can cause permanent white spots and staining. Brilliant oral hygiene means healthier teeth, fresher breath, a confident smile, and protecting your overall wellbeing. Totally worth those few minutes daily!
Q: What is an oral hygiene routine?
Your daily defence system! Brush twice a day or three times daily during orthodontic treatment. Use interdental brushes and/or floss to clean between teeth, swish with specialist alcohol free mouthwash between brushing, and visit your dentist regularly. With orthodontics, add cleaning aligners or checking for food around brackets. Consistency is key – make it habit, not hassle. Subscribe to treatment-specific kits such as orthodontic kits, healthy gums, anticaries or daily whitening so you're always stocked up!
Q: How do I remove plaque from my teeth?
Brush thoroughly twice a day (three times daily with orthodontics) with fluoride toothpaste – that's your first line of defence! Interdental brushes are absolute game-changers for reaching spots toothbrushes miss and where they can’t venture - in between teeth. Use mouthwash to swoosh away lingering bacteria in between brushing when it can start to get a foothold again. Disclosing tablets used weekly can help you understand where your brushing technique might not be so effective and you can adapt and start paying every part of your mouth the attention it deserves. For stubborn tartar (hardened plaque), visit your hygienist for professional cleaning. Prevention beats cure – consistent daily care stops plaque becoming permanent problems!
