The Benefits of Orthodontic Mouthwash with Aligners
Wearing aligners? Put medical-grade orthodontic mouthwash in your wraparound oral care
Welcome to Healthy Smile Pharmacy’s Why, When, Where and How of aligners and mouthwash. Psst - things might not be quite as they are on the TV!

Wearing aligners? Then you know the score!
Aligners change the delicate chemical balance of your mouth which can inhibit saliva production. Less saliva gives bacteria the advantage. To combat this, aligner wearers need to:
- Brush three times a day
- Get handy with interdental brushes
- Between brushing, use mouthwash

Why enlist the help of a specialised orthodontic mouthwash?
doing what ordinary mouthwashes don't do
We get it: all mouthwash freshens breath - our flavour of choice is apple mint - and plenty boast antibacterial properties, too. But, when it comes to performance, choosing a mouthwash from a high street brand means you risk it being little better than a two-trick pony!
Employ an Extra Security Detail with Four Key Ingredients to Mitigate Risks
Aligners spell bacteria. Bacteria spells risk. Chose a clinically proven orthodontic mouthwash and you’re doubling down on your oral health. Now we’re talking!

With 4 Key Ingredients for cleaning and protecting:
Move over regular mouthwash, make room for VITIS Orthodontic Mouthwash:
1. Give enemy biofilm nowhere to hide with Cetylpyridinium Chloride (CPC)
Kill bacteria. Stop it multiplying. Prevent bacterial toxins inflaming gums with this broad spectrum oral anti-septic. Yes, please!
2. Defend and resist with Fluoride (226 ppm)
Armour up by reducing acid production. Deploy dual-layered protection for tooth enamel by increasing enamel’s resistance and remineralising. Load up on a further layer of anti-bacterial properties. Contender ready!

3. Help damaged tissues heal with Allantoin
Amp up cell production to regenerate damaged tissues. Protect your mouth with anti-irritant effects for oral mucosa. Ahh, that really does help!
4. Hydrate, soothe and enjoy further healing effects with Aloe Vera
Give healthy gums a hand. Give a leg-up to healing irritations. Calm the flame with the anti-inflammatory effects for your gums. What a relief!
When Should You Use Mouthwash?
Life isn’t always like the adverts so don’t use mouthwash straight after brushing. In general, toothpaste has more fluoride in it than mouthwash, so the British Dental Association recommends waiting for a while after brushing your teeth as you don’t want to rinse that level of protection away.
Brush with VITIS Orthodontic Toothpaste and you’ll be souped-up with fluoride protection at three points in your day. Then use VITIS Orthodontic Mouthwash in between brushing. After that mid-morning cuppa or taking a quick swish before commuting home gives your mouth and teeth the anti-bacterial boost and fluoride boost they need before they go back into your aligner. Job done!
How Should I Use Mouthwash?
Mouthwash: swish it, swoosh it, work it around your mouth. It’s a great workout for mouth muscles! If you’re interested in gargling, then know that it is useful for reaching bacteria at the back of the mouth. You don’t need to gargle the whole of the National Anthem, but the first line would help!
The British Dental Association (BDA) recommends you use mouthwash alongside brushing and flossing, never instead of, so don’t be a slacker. (To be fair, the BDA didn’t say don’t be a slacker – we did – but they did say never swap mouthwash for brushing, so don’t be tempted).
Don’t be embarrassed where you use mouthwash
The good habit of not using mouthwash straight after we’ve brushed our teeth but still using it 3 or 4 times a day, means normalising a quick swish outside of your own bathroom.
In Pretty Woman Vivienne flosses after strawberries in a stranger’s hotel bathroom, knowing that ‘you shouldn’t neglect your gums’ (and in this case, your teeth in aligners), you need to adopt the same mindset. Be proud of looking after your oral health. Don’t be embarrassed - having those pearly whites tip top is more important for treatment success than falling into the trap of being ‘polite’ in the work or school washroom. Just rinse and wipe the sink afterwards!
A little tip for you: if it feels very weird swishing and spitting in a public restroom, take the mouthwash into a cubicle and use it there.

Using Orthodontic Mouthwash as part of your daily routine spells Ding! Ding! Ding! for your teeth and gums ...
