Staining Food and Drink? Give Them the Brush Off
You and your teeth have a busy social life. That morning coffee, the lunchtime sushi with soy sauce, the evening glass of red – they all have one thing in common beyond taste: they're leaving their mark on your smile.
No one wants that!
At Healthy Smile Pharmacy, we prefer it when you’re a food stain dodging ninja.
And we hear your cry: But doesn’t that mean I have to give up everything I love?
No! You just need to know the game - and how to win it.
HERE'S THE SCIENCE BIT, AND IT'S WORTH KNOWING
Why do teeth stain in the first place?
Your teeth have a natural protein film coating - the pellicle. It forms within minutes of brushing and is on your side.
The pellicle does good work for our oral health:
Protecting enamel from acid – nice.
Reducing wear – pellicle, we salute you.
Helping with remineralisation – chef's kiss.
The catch?
Staining compounds love it too. Unfortunately, it’s also a welcome mat; the pellicle, bless it, isn't terribly fussy about who it lets in.
When tea, coffee, red wine, deeply coloured berries, and tomato-based sauces come to visit, their tannins and chromogens (the fancy pants terms for food pigments) permeate the pellicle.
If they sit there long enough, it isn’t just the surface of the tooth they lounge on. Pigments can work their way into the enamel itself, and they’re more stubborn to shift.
Add in enamel softening acids - fizzy tipples, fruity foods or teas - and you've got a tribe of trouble working against your smile every single day.

You can always swap a bit of the rainbow
We know, we know – eating the rainbow is great for your health. But some shades of that rainbow are no respecters of your smile. Deeply coloured foods are deeply coloured for a reason: natural pigments. Artificial food colourings deserve a big dose of side-eye too.
Reaching for the best whitening toothpaste isn't for everyone. If you're managing a gum condition, undergoing treatment, or simply not sure whether whitening is right for you, food and drink swaps are genuinely powerful on their own. Avoiding the staining culprits is always the smartest first move – whatever else is going on with your oral health.

Get you, switcheroo!
Some easy swaps to keep things bright:
Some easy swaps to keep things bright:
- Swap darkly coloured berries and cherries for sliced apples and pears. White grapes and bananas? Absolutely fine. Nom nom nom!
- Tomato sauces can be the enemy. Creamy sauces are your new best friend. Ban the bolognese, celebrate the carbonara! The same goes for tomato ketchup and barbecue sauce – make friends with mayonnaise instead. And don't get caught out: most pizza has a tomato sauce base lurking beneath all that cheese. Dagnabbit!
- Raw like sushi? The fish and rice are fine. The soy sauce is not. Swerve the soy, scatter a few grains of salt instead. Extra bougie sushi points awarded.
- Cola and fizzy drinks often come in colours that belong in an art gallery rather than a glass. Go clear, go sugar-free, and learn to love still water. Your enamel will thank you.
- Tea and coffee? Their tannins leave brown stains given half the chance. If you can't live without them, go milky – dairy proteins bind to tannins and reduce their sticking power. Now that's a marriage made in heaven. A latte over a black coffee is genuinely the smarter smile choice. Make ours to go!
There's a way to rejoin curry club ...
You don't have to eat beige forever. You just have to be consistent.
Love a curry? A lasagne? Foods with serious staining potential? Here's the workaround: rinse with water – it's one of the simplest things you can do to dodge stains.
Rinse: it’s your secret weapon
Rinsing dilutes tannins and chromogens before they've had time to bond. It's not glamorous but it fights the battle.
Amp up your rinsing with VITIS Whitening Mouthwash or go the whole hog and subscribe to one of our Whitening and Enamel Care Products.
Let’s delve into their formulations that stains hate but your teeth love ...

consistency is key
Your daily routine is where the real magic happens
The most effective approach to staining is one that removes what's already there and makes it harder for new stains to take hold.
That's exactly what VITIS Whitening is formulated for.
Its exclusive Nanorepair® technology uses hydroxyapatite nanoparticles – the very mineral your enamel’s made from – to repair micro-grooves and surface imperfections in your teeth. Why does that matter? Because rougher enamel gives those colourful food pigments far more surface to grip. Smoother, repaired enamel is naturally more stain resistant.
The formula also contains polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), which actively lifts existing surface stains and creates a barrier that makes it harder for new ones to stick.
Tea stains? Tamed.
Coffee stains? Cancelled.
Red wine? Handled.
Tobacco? Totally gone.

Perlite for pearly whites
Polish them off!
Perlite – a gentle polishing agent in VITIS Whitening Toothpaste – buffs enamel to a brighter, glossier finish in the process. Unlike some whitening toothpastes we could mention (if your current toothpaste choice has a ‘max’ or ‘smokers’ in the title, it’s probably time for an enamel loving swap), VITIS Whitening has low abrasivity, making it safe for daily use.
A dentist-controlled efficacy study showed visible results in as little as ten days. That's not a gimmick – it's a medical-grade formula doing exactly what it was designed to do.
Pair the toothpaste with VITIS Whitening Mouthwash – which swooshes the same stain-fighting ingredients into the hard-to-reach spots your toothbrush can’t reach – and you've got a magnificent daily whitening duo.
- The toothpaste lifts, repairs and protects.
- The mouthwash keeps up the good work in between.
- They're better together.
The Whitening Complete Kit or the Whitening Essentials Kit bring toothpaste and rinse into easy, flexible subscription options so you're never without your gleam team.
Phew! Stains have nowhere to hide! Might take a nibble on that dark chocolate after all ...
Staining isn't inevitable - it's a process
And a process can be interrupted at every stage: at the food and drink choices you make, in the moment with a water rinse, and daily withVITIS Whitening Toothpaste and Mouthwash keeping your enamel smooth, strong, and beautifully resistant to everything life throws at it.
