2. Your teeth might feel wobbly. Wearing you removable retainer night and day stabilises teeth.
Shaimaa tells us, ‘When my braces came off, my teeth felt wobbly. I was told to wear my retainer both day and night for two weeks to stabilise my teeth.’
Why do teeth out of braces feel wobbly?
Teeth are in place, but tissues and bone are still re-organising. The periodontal ligament (PDL) attaching teeth to bone is stretchy. Like memory foam, the PDL wants to retreat to its old position, pulling your teeth with it. It can happen for months after treatment.
Fortunately, removeable and fixed retainers gently remind the PDL where you want it. Stay, boy!
Psst! Read more about why teeth wobble in and out of braces here
The solution? Turning your retainer into a temporary aligner helps
You may be told to do this for a couple of weeks, like Shaimaa, or maybe longer. It depends on what sort of adjustments were made to straighten your teeth. Less complex teeth straightening cases may need less stabilising, more complex cases can mean your orthodontist is more cautious. And for cautious, read a longer time wearing your retainer night and day.
STIFFENING YOUR RESOLVE
3. Fixed retainers are trusty allies too
Having a fixed retainer fitted helps stabilise teeth for the long term– that stiff little grafter is glued in behind your front teeth putting in a shift 24/7. It’s often the front six, sometimes top and bottom, thoughfrequentlyonly the bottom six – the teeth in your bottom jaw can be little rascals when it comes to relapse.Booooo! But that wire keeps them in line! Helpful, right?

keeping it monotip-top
Monotip brushes for the win – cleaning your fixed retainer
When it comes to cleaning your fixed retainer, you're already familiar with the best tool in your arsenal – the VITIS Monotip Brush. And there's science behind why it's the right one for the job. Tell that to the science teachers!
Single-tufted brushes significantly reduce plaque on orthodontic hardware. . It’s exactly the kind of terrain your fixed retainer creates along the back of your front teeth - a series of tight angles and bonding points where a regular toothbrush simply can’t reach. Your old friend the monotip's single dense cluster of bristles navigates right under the wire and around each individual bonding point, disrupting plaque before it gets comfortable back there.
Two minutes.
Once a day.
Be on your way, biofilm!

DON’T JETTISON YOUR OLD FRIENDS JUST YET
4. Fixed retainers, if any bit of it pings off, don’t pull it!
Shaimaa tells us, ‘I’ve been unlucky because it wasn’t too long before my fixed retainer snapped. I had to go back to my dentist, who’s also my orthodontist, to have a new fixed retainer made and stuck back in place. But I knew it was important that I had it replaced as it keeps my teeth where they should be full time and I didn’t want all my hard work to go to waste. 14 months in braces isn’t a small amount of time!’
Be prepared and don’t pull!
If it does begin to come away, our advice is don’t pull or try dental DIY. While the wire’s smooth against your teeth, if it starts to come away, it’s sharp. Don’t throw away that Orthodontic Wax! It’s saved your life before and you’ll be kissing the pack again if you need to wrap some around a broken fixed retainer!

keep it clean!
5. When your retainer becomes an ‘aligner’, the aligner rules apply
You've flipped into aligner territory for a while. And bacteria’s got a whole new playground. Reduced oxygen levels? It loves that!
The wearing rules:
- Your retainer-as-aligner is a water only zone
- Your retainer-as-aligner must come out when you eat or drink
- Yes, every time! Food and sugary drinks sealed against your teeth under a plastic tray for hours is not an enamel friendly situation
- When it comes out, it goes somewhere safe - not in a tissue, not in your pocket, not balanced on the edge of the table. In its box. Always.
The good news: you're already in a good place because you've been following a 3x a day brushing routine — and that stays the same. That breakfast, midday and bedtime routine is still non-negotiable. No Tooth Fairy is going to grant your wish that you can brush less!
Your VITIS Orthodontic Mouthwash stays in the kit too. Use it between brushing sessions to give your mouth an antibacterial and fluoride boost at exactly the right moment - just before the retainer goes back in and creates that low-oxygen environment once again.
And the cleaning routine? Your retainer-as-aligner needs its daily bubble spa break:
- Quick gentle brush of your retainer with a soft brush
- Cold water in your Appliance Soaking Bath
- Drop in a VITIS Effervescent Cleaning Tablet
- Retainer into its spa
- 15 minutes
- Rinse, dry, done!
- Back to round-the-clock wear (it’ll be worth it)
Never be tempted to use toothpaste as a cleaner. It scratches and turns your clear retainer cloudy. When it's being worn as an aligner, misty is not a good look.

TIME TO GET FIZZY!
6. Graduated to nighttime-only retainer wear? The non-negotiable morning routine
After eight hours of overnight wear and doing a brilliant job, your retainer has an overnight saliva coating. Not cute! Nobody wants to pop that back in their mouth the following evening.
Show it, and yourself, some love first!
So what does the morning retainer routine actually look like? Easy!
- Retainer out
- Gentle brush with a soft brush and cold water
- Pop it into your Appliance Soaking Bath
- VITIS Effervescent Cleaning Tablet in
- 15 minutes (though you can actually walk away until bedtime)
Get on with your day! Or watch it fizz as that tablet gets to work eliminating bacteria so you’re fresh at bedtime.

EVERY DAY, PERIOD!
7. It’s not a when-I-remember routine or a when-I-can-be-bothered routine
Drier mouths at night (try XyliMelts to help deliver tooth loving xylitol protection when you zed), a reduced oxygen environment, yesterday’s dried saliva. That’s a recipe for decay.
Every single morning, rain or shine, rushed or relaxed, staying at a friend's house, on holiday (we’ve got a great Retainer Travel Kit for both), generally ‘lifing’ - follow the routine.
The only thing worse than cleaning a retainer every day is not cleaning it - and discovering what happens to your retainer, and your teeth, when you don't.

FUTUREPROOFED STRAIGHT TEETH
8. Your retainer is precious. Treat it like it is.
'I learned that using hot or even warm water to rinse my retainer risked warping the plastic so that it twisted out of shape and would no longer fit over my teeth properly.'
Shaimaa learned that one the straightforward way – a great instruction from her dentist!
But it's one of the most common retainer rookie errors.
The rule’s simple:
Cold water only.
Every time.
No exceptions.
Your retainer is precision-made to fit your teeth exactly. Heat changes that. Even warm water from a tap is enough to warp the plastic into something that no longer does its job properly.
oh, and another thing ... or two
9. And while we're on the subject of treating your retainer with respect ...
... a word about where you leave it. In a tissue on the side of the sink? The back pocket of your jeans? Balanced on the edge of the bathroom shelf? NOT retainer homes but retainer graveyards. Have a dog? You know the rest!
A flushed/snapped/missing/chewed retainer means expensive replacement.
Box it. Every time.
Use The Bedside Table Rule
Keep your retainer in its box next to where you sleep. Right there, within arm's reach at bedtime. An easy-to-reach retainer is a retainer that’s used. Which is the whole point, right?
what orthodontists now say
10. Follow the research to keep your teeth aligned for life
Your orthodontist isn’t being overcautious. The science is unambiguous. Without retention, the tendency is for teeth to return to their initial position – and relapse is a lifetime risk.
Teeth aren’t static structures. They sit in a dynamic environment that exerts its constant influence on tooth position throughout life:
Muscle pressure
Bite forces
Gum fibres
Ongoing natural growth
The University of Washington research – considered landmark in orthodontics – found when patients wore retainers for only 1 – 2 years, 70% had a serious need for retreatment ten years later. Ten years isn’t ancient history – it's you in your mid-twenties, wishing you'd kept the habit going! A 5-minute habit protecting years of brace treatment.
Shaimaa wore her braces for 14 months. Her retainer takes 30 seconds to put in at night and a few minutes to clean in the morning. That's not a difficult trade for lifelong straight teeth support.
